Proceedings of the annual meeting of the Arbeitskreis Südasien online
The latest proceedings of the 12th annual meeting of the Arbeitskreis Südasien (Working group on South Asia), which was hosted in Bonn/online in January 2022, have now been published. The volume is edited by Judith Müller, Juliane Dame, Sneha Sharma and Carsten Butsch. It compiles contributions in geographical research on South Asia on urban development, COVID19 pandemic and connectivity in border regions. The publication is available open access.

AAG Annual Meeting 2023
Dr. Juliane Dame and Dr. Johanna Höhl (Institute of Geography, Heidelberg University) hosted a session on the topic „Water governance and hydrosocial conflicts in transformative contexts: examples from Latin America“ at this year’s annual meeting of the Association of Geographers (AAG) that took place in Denver/hybrid from 23.-27-03.2023. A talk on „Socio-hydrological dynamics and water conflicts in the upper Huasco Valley, Chile“ (Juliane Dame, Marcus Nüsser, Susanne Schmidt, Carina Zang) presented findings from the junior research group.

Lecture Series: Vechtaer Gesellschaft für Geographie e.V.
On Monday, 06.02.2023, Juliane Dame was invited to be a guest speaker in the lecture series on „Transformation processes in Asia“ at Vechta (Vechtaer Geographische Gesellschaft e.V.). She gave a presentation on the topic „Global change in the Indian Transhimalaya: development processes, socio-ecological challenges and adaptation strategies“.

Juliane Dame receives Dr. Hohmann award 2022
Dr. Juliane Dame was awarded this year’s prize of the Gesellschaft für Erdkunde zu Köln e.V. for her research on “Ice stupas as climate adaptation technology in arid mountain regions”.

Field work in Chile
Juliane Dame visited Chile in October and November 2022 for conducting research within the project „Governing resources in contested territories“ (PI: Dr. Johanna Höhl, Heidelberg Center Latin America). During the stay in the regions BíoBío und Los Ríos, the team conducted qualitative interviews on water use and resource governance.

Dissertation by Judith Müller published as a book
In November 2022, Judith Müller’s dissertation on „Urban Mountain Waterscapes in Leh, Indian Trans-Himalaya. The Transformation of Hydro-Social Relations” has been published by Springer. The book is part of the series „Advances in Asian Human-Environmental Research (AAHER)“, edited by Prof. Dr. Marcus Nüsser.

At the Scientific Assembly of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS 2022) in Montpellier, Frankreich (29.05.-03.06.22) Marcus Nüsser (with Susanne Schmidt und Juliane Dame) presented the paper “Cryosphere changes and local adaptation strategies: socio-hydrological case studies from the Himalayan region”.

Annual meeting of the research group South Asia (Arbeitskreis Südasien) in Bonn (online)
Juliane Dame co-organised this year’s annual meeting of the research group South Asia (Arbeitskreis Südasien) on 21-22 January 2022, which took place as an online event keeping in line with the current pandemic conditions. She also presented a paper on changes in the urban mountain waterscape in the context of rapid urbanization and climate change using the example of the city of Leh in the Indian Trans-Himalaya (together with Judith Müller, Marcus Nüsser and Susanne Schmidt). Moreover, Juliane Dame and Judith Müller are co-editors of this year’s conference proceedings.

New publication: Urbanisation in Ladakh: migration patterns and socio-ecological implications
A chapter on urbanisation processes in Ladakh by Juliane Dame and Judith Müller was published in the volume “New Perspectives on Modern Ladakh. Fresh Discoveries and Continuing Conversations in the Indian Himalaya” edited by Rafal Beszterda, John Bray and Elizabeth Williams-Oerberg.

In the new textbook on Human Geography, edited by R. Schneider-Sliwa, R. Wehrhahn, I. Helbrecht and B. Braun, a chapter on integrative research perspectives on environment and development by Marcus Nüsser, Christoph Bergmann and Juliane Dame has been published.

Indo-German Workshop on Water Availability and Quality in Heidelberg
The interdisciplinary Indo-German Workshop on Water Availability and Quality Under Varying Environmental and Urban Conditions took place at Heidelberg University, Germany. On October 22nd and 23rd, researchers from Germany and India met in the hybrid event to foster interdisciplinary exchange on the various aspects of water availability and quality. One key topic dealt with “Socio-hydrology and water resources management” and included two presentations on sociohydrological dynamics in the Northwestern Himalayas.
Susanne Schmidt, Dagmar Brombierstäudl, Stanzin Passang, Juliane Dame and Marcus Nüsser presented their research on "Glaciers, snow and neglected forms of frozen water: cryosphere components in the Transhimalaya of Ladakh”. In a second talk, Marcus Nüsser, Susanne Schmidt, Dagmar Brombierstäudl and Juliane Dame presented conceptual thoughts “Towards a socio-hydrological framework for the northwestern Himalaya”.

Presentations at the International Conference on Sociohydrology, Delft, 6-8 September 2021
In September, the first international sociohydrology conference was hosted in Delft, Netherlands, as a hybrid event. Juliane Dame, Susanne Schmidt, Carina Zang and Marcus Nüsser presented research results entitled "Hydrosocial dynamics and water conflicts in the Upper Huasco Valley, Chile – an integrative assessment". In another paper, Marcus Nüsser, Susanne Schmidt and Juliane Dame presented the topic "Potential, limitations and risks: Towards a socio-hydrological framework for the Himalayan region". Juliane Dame received a grant from the Newave (Next Water Governance) project.

Article on adaptation strategies in Chile published in the International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction
An article by Laura Meltzer, Juliane Dame, and Sabine Gabrysch (PIK, Potsdam) in the peer-reviewed International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction addresses adaptation strategies in the aftermath of a flood event in northern Chile, with particular attention to health consequences. A standardized survey revealed that physical health impacts were uncommon and mild, and not linked to adaptation behaviour. However, mental health impacts were common and an ongoing issue one year after the flood. Material damages and affected infrastructure determined individual adaptation strategies.

Special issue on the Covid19 pandemic and geographical research in South Asia published in ASIEN
Judith Müller, together with Carsten Butsch (Cologne/Bonn), Alexander Follmann (Cologne) and Markus Keck (Cologne/Göttingen), has co-edited a special issue on "Geographies of South Asia: Empirical Research and the Pandemic" published in June 2021 in the journal ASIEN of the German Association of Asian Studies. The editorial highlights the challenges that geographical research in South Asia in general; and the ways in which they have been exacerbated by the Covid19 pandemic in particular. Other contributions in the issue highlight the diversity of geographical research in South Asia and report on research on social and ecological issues in India, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Laura Meltzer successfully passed her oral examination as part of the medical doctoral program (Dr. med.) at the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg. Congratulations! In the meantime, she has started her residency in gynaecology.
