Prof. Dr. Endre Borbáth
Junior professor of Empirical-Analytical Participation Research at the IPW at Heidelberg University, HCE member since 2024.
I study the electoral and protest dynamics of the emerging climate divide and focus on the following key questions:
- Which coalitions of actors mobilize around the climate divide, and what repertoires of contention do they adopt?
- How do individuals participate in the climate divide—considering its depth (intensity), breadth (issues), and forms (electoral and non-electoral)—and how does the repertoire of contention employed by mobilizing actors influence their participation?
- How are in-group and out-group identities formed through mobilization and participation on the climate divide, particularly within the broader context of polycrisis?

Why I joined the HCE
My primary motivation for joining HCE was to connect with a diverse network of scholars and engage in interdisciplinary discussions about the environment and climate change. I saw this as an opportunity to share my work while learning from others in a collaborative setting.
My highlights so far
One particularly rewarding experience with HCE has been collaborating on a research proposal with other members. Engaging in discussions and observing how colleagues tackle similar issues from diverse perspectives has inspired me to think beyond the boundaries of my own discipline.
My key partners
My key partners include the Center for Civil Society Research at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center, the European University Institute in Florence, and the Centre on Social Movement Studies at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Italy. Additionally, I collaborate with co-authors from a diverse range of universities and research institutions across Germany, as well as Western, Central and Eastern Europe.
