Prof. Dr. Jale Tosun
Professor at the Institute of Political Sciences at Heidelberg University, HCE member since 2013.
My key research questions are:
- Which design choices are taken when formulating climate, energy and environmental policy?
- Which policy instruments are effective in bringing about behavioral change?
- How does scientific evidence influence policy decisions?
- How does international and transnational cooperation affect climate, energy and environmental policy?

Why I joined the HCE
I believe in interdisciplinary research. However, we need dedicated institutions to bridge disciplinary silos. That's why the HCE's role as a bridge-builder is so valuable to me and Heidelberg University's scientific community
My highlights so far
Leading interdisciplinary research projects like Effect-Net (studying chemical impacts on aquatic ecosystems) and AgroBioDiv (focused on biodiversity and climate action) has been rewarding both professionally and personally. I've also valued HCE events, including the scientific symposium celebrating the KLIMA ARENA anniversary. The HCE Bridge Seminars' talks have been consistently inspiring.
My key partners
Through the ERC-funded DeepDCarb project (Deep Decarbonisation: The Democratic Challenge of Navigating Governance Traps), I closely collaborate with the University of East Anglia. The Research Council of Norway funds ACCELZ (Accelerating Climate Action and the State: Getting to Net Zero), connecting me with the University of Oslo and CICERO (Center for International Climate Research). The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in European Environmental Economics and Policy (M3EP) links me to 4EU+ universities in Copenhagen, Milan, Prague, and Warsaw. I also work with partners in the Jean Monnet Network GreenDeal-NET (The European Green Deal: Governing the EU's Transition towards Climate Neutrality and Sustainability), coordinated by the Brussels School of Governance's Centre for Environment, Economy and Energy at Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
