Prof. Dr. Oliver Friedrich

Professor for Sedimentology & Marine Paleoenvironmental Dynamics at the Institute of Earth Sciences at Heidelberg University, HCE member since 2014.

I am particularly interested in the evolution of Earth climate, oceans and ecosystems of the Meso- and Cenozoic (in particular the past 140 million years) and how this information can be used to inform about recent and future climate change.

More about me

Why I joined the HCE

Understanding the feedbacks and underlying mechanisms between different aspects of the Earth system (e.g., climate, oceans, cryosphere, ecosystems) requires a multidisciplinary approach that crosses different scientific disciplines. Therefore, I decided to join HCE when I started my position as a professor of Heidelberg University in 2013.

My highlights so far

What is very useful is the insight one gets into other disciplines and scientific research fields that are outside the own core expertise. It certainly helps to understand that there are very different ways to discuss and solve scientific problems.

My key partners

Apart from national and international collaborators from the field of Earth sciences, key partners in Heidelberg are particularly at the Institute of Geography and the Institute of Environmental Physics.
