Prof. Dr. Marc-Philippe Weller
Professor at the Institute for comparative law, conflict of laws and international business law at Heidelberg University, HCE member since 202?.
My key research questions are:
- How can European Law and private law address the cross-border dimension of climate change?
- How can companies be incentivized to contribute to climate change mitigation?
- How can corporate sustainability be enhanced?
- Can private actors be held accountable for their contribution to climate change?

Why I joined the HCE
In order to effectively address climate change, law relies heavily on other disciplines such as political science, climate economics and environmental physics. The HCE is a prime example of how climate and environmental issues can be examined comprehensively.
My highlights so far
The 74th German Jurists' Conference 2024, the largest legal conference in Germany, commissioned me to prepare an expert opinion with reform proposals for the climate change transformation of corporate law. I found the discussions with academics and business representatives particularly valuable. The first events with the HCE Bridge were very enlightening and, as a relatively new member of the HCE, make me eager for more.
My key partners
I work closely with the British Institute of International and Comparative Law, for example as the German Rapporteur for the BIICL Climate Litigation Toolbox. My teaching activities include lectures and visiting professorships on corporate sustainability at many of our partner universities, including Georgetown University (Washington D.C.), the Sorbonne (Paris), National Taiwan University (Taipei), Tongji University (Shanghai), the National Law School of India (Bangalore) and the Universitá di Napoli L'Orientale (Naples).
